Cattle of the Hallikar breed are endemic to Karnataka. In southern India, the breed is regarded as the best draught breed. It is frequently observed in the traditional Hallikar belt in the districts of Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, and Tumakuru. One of the two breeds, along with Amrit Mahal, that was given royal protection and attention by the former kings of the princely State of Mysore was Hallikar cattle. We obtain milk from our farmers who own only local breed hallikar cows, and we produce ghee according to traditional methods, using only wooden churners to separate the butter from the curd.
